Across the river and yet so far away.
PRINCETON
I should have visited Princeton a lot more when I was in highschool. I'm not sure if I would have been accepted or attended the university but I look back and regret not applying. The school is put together extremely well in a manner that seems conducive to increasing learning. The other Ivy League schools just don't compare in terms of beauty and tranquility. There is more to Princeton than the University. There's a small "downtown" area that has several decent restaurants and Small World Coffee is a good spot to grab a hot drink before or after dinner. That's Einstein's house to the right. |
NEW BRUNSWICK
Every time the train has stopped at New Brunswick when I've taken NJ transit from Trenton to NYC, I've thought I should depart here sometime and check out the city. Finally, one night when I was flying out of JFK I walked around New Brunswick to avoid sitting in traffic. The tail tracks divide the city with Rutgers University to the north and the city's commercial district to the south.
Easton Avenue is home to the restaurants and bars catering to Rutgers students. I walked up Easton then cut across Stone to reach the University which has a nice blend of historical and modern buildings.

From the south end of campus I walked along the Raritan River, passed Johnson and Johnson's world headquarters and down George Street, which caters to the non-college crowd. I had New Brunswick style dog at Destination Dogs before heading back to my car for the remainder of the drive to JFK. I'm glad I stopped and finally saw New Brunswick, which is a very underrated college town.
MOORESTOWN
Moorestown is one of Philadelphia's nicest New Jersey suburbs. It served briefly as the residence of Terrell Owens and I'm sure everyone was glad when he left. I've wanted to visit for a while but have always been unable to find a "destination" to put into Google maps. One Saturday I eventually settled for The Cubby Hole, hoping it was more coffeeshop than cafe. It wasn't. I ordered my Americano to go then walked up one side of the main street and down the other. It's a nice and quiet town although I don't understand the fuss about it and find it strange Terrell Owens lived here. Now that I've visited, I'm sure he was just as happy to leave.

From Moorestown I drove to Palmyra with stops at Jay's Elbow Room and The Jug Handle Inn. I skipped my focus on microbreweries (I've stopped at the nearby Double Nickel before) to visit more local bars and enjoyed both of the drinking establishments. I also really like Palmyra. In Jenny's Java Joint it had the coffee shop I was looking for in Moorestown. There's not much else in Palmyra but I kind of liked that aspect of the town. It was quiet and charming.
TRENTON
Is there a worse state capital than Trenton? Is there a worse example of how politicians can't keep there work space clean how can they be trusted with anything else, capital? My Trenton experience has always been limited to the areas directly around the Trenton Transit Center which has always seemed to attract a scary set of homeless people. Even though the station has been completely redone i still drive and park in Hamilton if I'm heading to NYC instead of just picking someone up at the train station.
After several instances of picking my wife up at the Trenton Train Station and never spend more time in the city than the time spent waiting in my car I finally decided that one day I’d arrive early - see what Trenton was all about. Surely there's something in Trenton? There isn't. But it was still fun searching for something.
There's always a coffee shop and this time it's Trenton Coffee Shop and Records.

I went around the Chambersburg area and then back to the State Capital via Broad Street. Some great past glory.
For years, say 38 years of life, I've known that Washington crossed the Delaware to attack the Hessians. I've visited the Pennsylvania side of the crossing numerous times. Not once did it occur to me to visit the New Jersey side. What could be there? Lo and behold the Hessian Barracks now a preserved historical site. It's an interested site that answers the questions like What happened after George Washington crossed the river? Were the Hessians really drunk? I enjoyed the tour...maybe there is something to see in Trenton after all.
