ETHIOPIA
Per Pete: "I selected a flight with a sixteen hour layover in Addis Ababa, as it would be a great chance to get out and see a place I otherwise may not have been able to visit. With limited time and some uncertainty on where to go and how to get around, I hired a guide for the day to pick me up from the airport, take me to the major sites and a few local places, then return me to the airport at the end.
Addis Ababa is very nice city, and an one of Africa's largest international and economically important hubs. It is a peaceful city and Ethiopia's people are mostly divided in religion, about 40% Christian, 40% Muslim. It's the third highest altitude capital in the world, making it pretty cool/pleasant temperatures year round, even though it's relatively close to the equator.
Ethiopia is consider the "birthplace" of human society - the oldest full, fossilized skeletons of human remains were found in the country and currently showcased in one of Addis Ababa's museum. Coincidentally or not Ethiopia is also the birthplace of coffee, from the town Kaffa. It's debatable over whether drinking coffee allowed primates to become more alert and develop human-like tendencies."
