Pete visited here during a trip that started in Ukraine and ended in Romania.
"Moldova is a tiny country between Ukraine and Romania. It's capital city, Chisinau, serves as its major commercial and political center. Moldova is known through Eastern Europe for its wine production. Coming from Kiev, Chisinau was kind of what I expected Eastern Europe to be like - a little run down, old buildings, and unkempt areas. It was a bit more of an off-the-path experience and I'm glad I stopped for two nights.
It is a fifteen hour train ride from Kiev to Chisinau. The third class train ride was brutal... no A/C, people eating meats and cheeses, a top bunk with no room to sit up. Men were not wearing any shirts.. Did I mention brutal?? Towards the end of the trip, a conductor on the train invited me into his cabin to drink some home-made wine. There was minimal communication, but we showed each other pictures of our families and where we were from."
