Victoria Park has a 0.6K jogging loop that I use to run in the morning but eventually switched to a later time in the day because in the morning the park can be very crowded. Every morning groups of seniors gather in Victoria Park for their morning exercise routines. Typically there are two groups of dancing ladies and several more smaller tai chi groups. Some of the tai chi groups use swords instead of fans. Not to be outdone there's always a few guys practicing karate.
The park's soccer courts also host events throughout the year, the largest being the Chinese New Year Flower Market.

MORNING EXERCISESIt's no wonder the Chinese live for so long - every morning retirees are out in force at Victoria Park. Their exercise routines go beyond the traditional tai chi to include choreographed dancing and cardiovascular routines. A few groups have replaced the tai chi fan with a badass sword. Men practice kung fu maneuvers in the bushes. I saw larger individual groups of exercises in Shenyang but the concentration of diversity in Victoria Park can't be beat. If you only in Hong Kong for a few days be sure to check out the morning exercises which start around 7 and usually finish by 8.

MOTOR BOATSMotor boats are apparently a "thing" in Hong Kong. As you walk through Victoria Park you may hear the hum of a faint engine off in the distance and as you get closer you'll see someone speed racing a motor boat in one of the park's pools.
I've see this activity in a few other parks but the pool in Victoria Park's Northwest Corner is fairly large and attracts large and fast motor boats. If I stay here long enough I may need to purchase one myself to see what the excitement is all about. |
