Suburbcity is a term I coined to describe the uniqueness of Singapore's urban structure. The city / state's organization is so distinct from any city I've ever visited that a new term felt necessary. Singapore has a city center that turns into sprawling suburbs...yet the suburbs do not remind me in any way of U.S. suburbs...the suburbs still have a city feel given the compactness, infrastructure, offerings, and ease of movement. Thus I believe the best way to describe Singapore's outer areas are as Suburbcities. Each weekend I will explore different areas to gain a thorough understanding of Singapore.
Alexandra Village and Pinnacle at Duxton (below, also a public housing complex) show that apartments don't need to be boring.
Nobody uses public transportation to the suburbs like Singapore.
