Pingyao is an old walled village that is well preserved and still has a lot of locals doing what they’ve been doing for 1,000s of years. There are a few main streets with the heavy tourist activities but once you go down a side street you have small lanes all to your self. Pingyao is a convenient stopover between Xi’an and Beijing - you can drop your bags at a hostel, walk around the city, then hop back on another night train. The local delicacy is Pingyao Beef - a cross between roast beef and corn beef and served cold.
That's really all I have on Pingyao. I caught an overnight train from Xi'an, took a nap upon arrival, walked around the town, hopped on another night train to Beijing. Totally worth it. A quick, easy, and awesome stop.

Pingyao is a walled city. From the train station, the walled city is a short, two-minute walk. I recall exiting the train station and the city walls were visible in front of me. Everything inside the walled city seemed preserved. There were a few motorized carts but I don't remember seeing any cars, etc. inside the city walls.
These a few old temples which the town considers its top attractions...
But really the attraction is getting lost and wondering from street to street.
