I've made a habit of picking a non-capital, non-major city as the first stop in a country so as to not let the first impression of the major destination bias or influence how I view the rest of the country. That's how I wound up spending a night in Pecs even though I easily could have taken a train an extra hour or two to Budapest. Pecs may be the exception to this rule in that Pecs was just ok and wow Budapest was awesome.
Pecs did not have much in the way of major attractions - the main purpose of the visit was to see life outside Hungary's largest city and that's what I saw. Certainly not as flashy or built-up as Hungary. It didn't have the tourist "infrastructure" either - this was one of the few times I truly struggled to find the hostel.
