I love visiting college towns. There's something about a small town that has an extra bit of electricity flowing through it that I looked forward to and try to include on a visit. Morgantown is home to West Virginia University. Unfortunately Memorial Day weekend is probably not the best time to visit. Half the storefronts in the commercial district were permanently closed. The other half were closed for Memorial Day weekend. Nice for the staff.
I stayed at the Morgan Hotel. It's a conveniently located historical hotel although if I ever stay there again I'll be sure to get a room on the western side of the building. Morgantown may be shutdown for the weekend but that doesn't stop the tram from running until after midnight and picking up service again at five in the morning.

Morgantown has several "must stops" and I tried to hit them all. Mario's Fishbowl serves beer in a goblet. It was warm. I was thirsty. The beer went down quick. Mountain State Brewing is located in a mixed use waterfront development community which shows that despite all the dilapidated homes rented to college students there is some growth in Morgantown. Up Route 115 is Dorsey's Knob. It's a Hill that overlooks the city but the surrounding trees block out the views of downtown Morgantown.
West Virginia University sits a few blocks down river from the city center. There's a couple of decent buildings. The benefit to students being away is that there is plenty of parking. Where does Morgantown rank on the list of college towns? It's no Chapel Hill or Ann Arbor. It reminded me a lot of Boone, NC home to Appalachian State in a worn, mountain standpoint.
