Montevideo is a slightly "lighter" version of Buenos Aires. Similar architecture in a smaller area. Once I arrived I walked down to the beach and had lunch at an "old man's club" where everyone seemed to know everyone else. I felt like I was interrupting a private party but the other patrons were all very welcoming. That night I walked down to Punta Carretera. The beach, that was empty during the day, was now packed at night. The Rio Plata was remarkable calm, more like a lake than a flowing body of water. Bathers were wade up to 100 yards out and still the water was only up to their waist. The next day I zigzagged through the Old Town area to Mercado del Puerto for lunch. The market felt a bit tourist centric so I went to an out of the way parilla on the way back to the hostel. Everything was good until I was mugged walking back. Nothing to crazy, just some fifteen year old punk kid. I had insurance and was able to replace a camera that I was not too happy with. I went back down to the beach that night.
From Montevideo I headed west to Colonia del Sacramento. The city was nice and quaint but it skews a bit to the couple crowd looking for a getaway weekend. Lots of boutique shops and cafes. I spent a day here then caught a ferry back to Buenos Aires for a few days before flying home for Christmas.
No photos of Montevideo or Colonia del Sacramento due to mugging.
