The Ginza / Hibiya area may be as close as Tokyo's street scenes comes to matching mid-town Manhattan. However, it's not the upmarket hotels, fine dining, fancy clubs or luxury retail that make this area worth visiting - it's the Izakaya scene under and around the JR Yurakucho Station. Tokyo restaurants have combined to earn 323 Michelin Stars - more than any other city including Paris...yet it's these small Izakayas lined up next to one another where you are likely to have a more memorable meal. All you need to do is find an open table, order a few skewers and a beer, and a few minutes later you are in gastronomical heaven. Through the yakatori smoke haze you can see city life pass by as you enjoy a simple meal.
