The best of Argentina Patagonia
Driving from Calafate to El Chalten involves going from one extreme, lots of tourists, to another, a remote wild west feel, town settled solely to protect Argentina’s regional border claims. However, the wild west feel may change now that El Chalten has been named by Lonely Planet as #2 of their Top Ten City Destinations 2015. It is a major, major stretch to include El Chalten on a "city" list but its certainly understandable why this location would be included on any top destination list. El Chalten has only existed since 1985 - anyone who moved here must like isolation, however, the residents have done a great job of creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
There are two striking peaks - Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torres - which can be visited in separate two day hikes returning to El Chalten at night or an overnight hike. The round trip hikes to the bases of the hikes takes about eight hours, while to viewpoints takes about four hours. There's not too much of an elevation gain after the initial climb heading out of town.
There are a few hotels and campsites in the town and the supermarkets have enough to stock up on supplies before continuing your journey. The only downside was that the ATM could not be accessed 24 hours and had the potential to run out of cash - this was as of November 2013, so it's possible with more growth it's easier to obtain cash in town.

Despite it's small size, El Chalten still packs quite a punch and offers enough cafes and dining spots to relax after a few days of hiking. Cafe Mathilda and La Ceveria, a local brew pub, were two of the more crowded restaurants. I was waffling on the full day hikes to Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torres, however, I felt no regret after spending additional time in town than on the trail.
