Philadelphia is 45% white. 45% black. In theory, under a true America is a melting pot environment, this would mean that every time you see a white person, you would also see a black person. In theory. East Falls may be the only neighborhood where this theory is close to reality.
The diversity of East Falls is somewhat tricky to explore because the neighborhood does not have a Main Street, per se. The intersection of Midvale and Ridge Avenue is as close as East Falls gets to a commercial district, and while there are some great places here—LeBus, In Riva, and Foghorn—I’ve always enjoyed exploring farther up the hill where places like Fiorino and Franklin’s are hidden within the neighborhood. Wissahickon Brewing and Vault + Vine are the ideal neighborhood microbrewery and coffee shop, respectively. Vault + Vine doubles as a greenhouse making it the most unique coffee shop in Philadelphia.
The Kelly House on Henry Avenue is the former residence of one of Philadelphia’s most famous entertaining families. It is where Grace Kelly was raised. The home has been a private residence for several years but was recently purchased by Prince Albert of Monaco, Grace Kelly’s son. I’m hoping he turns the house into a museum and opens it to the public.
