Per Pete:
"I don't even remember how I found out about this place looking online, Ang Thong isn't really a tourist spot and people in my office (expats and Thais alike) had not heard of the famous Wat there. Ang Thong sits on the same route heading to Chiang Mai, 30 minutes north of Ayyuthaya, an hour and a half from Bangkok. Ang Thong town itself did not seem to have much going on, but Wat Muang is a must-see in Thailand. I only saw twp other Westerners when I was there.
You can easily go up and back in a day from Bangkok. You can also do Bangkok, Ang Thong, and Ayyuthaya in a day but would be a lot. I went to Ang Thong, then Ayyuthaya and spent a night there. It is a great weekend trip from Bangkok that I expect to do again with friends and family.
They say Wat Muang is the largest Buddhist statue in the world. It certainly is the largest one in Thailand. You will need to take a motorcycle taxi to reach the Buddha."
